The University of Sydney Sailing Club is finally stepping up to a whole new level. In the second weekend of October, we will be, in association with the UNSW Windsurfing Club, be travelling to the sunny and palm-filled beaches of Hawks Nest, a mere 3 hours north of Sydney.
The idea is to travel to the area with 3 boats, as well as windsurfers supplied by the UNSW Windsurfing Club and have a general good drunken time over 2 days (and some sailing).
Estimated cost is in the region of $100 total, with about $25 for petrol (total round trip figure), figure insurance is being negotiated (under $20)
The sum of around $100 includes EVERYthing, including a ridiculous amount of food/booze, the accommodation, equipment (limited amount of wetsuits avaliable, please email/call to check).
Please come for the fun/sun and meet some very nice/cool people from our sister organization at UNSW Windsurfing.

We're back on as usual after a break last weekend. The forecast looks extremely favorable at this point, but as usual, is a bit early to tell at this point in the week.
We had an extremely successful inaugural social event on Tuesday, a great turnout, thanks to all those who came and to all those who didn't, consider coming next time.
Some of our members joined the UNSW Windsurfing Club on a windsurfing trip up the coast to Hawks Nest last weekend. This was extremely generous of them and a great time for all involved. Our clubs are looking forward to a promising relationship in the future with joint events in planning. Stay posted on this exciting development!
Hey guys, we would like to apologise to all members affected, but we are unable to hold sailing this weekend due to a lack of qualified club personnel being avaliable to supervise it. It appears that the mid-semester exams have gotten the best of us at this point, but we are extremely optimistic about being able to resume sailing next weekend.
Sailing on this weekend! See everyone down at 10:30am. There have been warnings (of a low probability) of a thunderstorm, although not till dusk or later in the evening, so we shouldn't have any problems. The wind forecast is mid strength, in the 13-17 knot range.
Sailing is great! but mixing with awesome sailors is better. We know that people have been laden with work this semester, and may find it hard to make it to the weekend sail days. So we're holding a dinner and drinks event during the week for everyone to catchup. Friends, prospective sailors, all welcome.
At this point, were looking to hold something in Week 9 or thereabouts, during the week, at this point on say, tuesday, but this is very preliminary and suggestions are most welcome. Please post them on the facebook event wall.
7:00pm- Converge on Dining Location
9:00pm- Move to bar
11:00pm- end (its a weeknight)
Venue: Manning Bar (and grill)
Date: Tuesday 23rd of September (Week 9)
Time: 7:00pm-11:00pm
Unfortunately once again due to the weather we have decided to canceled sailing on saturday. This is a sad thing as there is a special Tasar day on down at the club with instruction from coaches.
While at this point there is no plans for Sunday, continue to check here for any changes.
If you wish to place an advertisement with us, email your boat details to sailingboardsailing@susport.usyd.edu.au and we will make your info available to university students!
2012 University Fleet Racing Regatta was held at RPAYC and was a great success. All of USYD's Laser and Tasar fleet were used to compete in the regatta, with mixed results but great fun had by all! USYD Captain Josie Roper came 3rd in the Open Skiff division, crewing on a B14 with Daniel Watson from UTS. Scholarship holders Beren Beowolf and Jack Nairn came 4th & 5th respectively in the competitive Laser Radial class.
SUSF Elite Athlete Program UPDATE
We want to congratulate the club's new scholarship holders under the SUSF Elite Athlete program. This is the largest number of scholarship and TAP holders we have had for many years. The new additions and current holders can be seen on
Last week we had a good turn out down at the club on another beautiful Sydney day. Everyone who came down got to go for a sail and enjoy the harbour. We did not manage to squeeze in a BBQ but a group still made it round for a quick Thai.
Unfortunately, this week is not looking so optimistic. The weather is looking wet and windy. Despite sailing being dependent on these two elements of nature, too much of either can make the experience less enjoyable. For this reason we don't think it's worth going out!
The weather prediction for Saturday has remained quite constant at 18-25 knots for most of this week so the chance of a change is unexpected.
Very sorry if you were looking forward to getting out but weather is weather and thats the way it is.
Hope the weather is good next week and to see you then!
Our Open Day for Second Semester was an unequivocal success! At least 25 potential members attended and we welcomed 6 new members. Unfortunately, the weather did not permit a sail, but we had a nice barbeque, meet n' greet and use of the simulator.
The forecast for this coming saturday appears to be ideal for beginners, with lighter winds predicted throughout the day (less than 10 knots).
For all new members, we will be meeting at the club from around 10:00am to start rigging up the boats.
Be at Fisher at 9am if you're unsure of how to reach the club.
If you are a member of the club or are interested in keeping track of whats going on in the club with weekly sailing or larger events, the easiest way is by join our Facebook group or checking this website. To go direct Click Here
Are you a new member? Haven't been down sailing in a while?
Join us at the University of Sydney Sailing Club Open Day!
All welcome (no need to join the club for the open day, subject to signing a waiver)! Membership ($30 or $55 with a T-Shirt))!
All levels of experience accepted! We have friendly senior members (including qualified instructors) on hand to take you out on larger boats or teach you how to sail your very own!
We will be running a barbeque all day, awesome sausages and vegetable alternatives.
What to bring: Wetsuit if you have one (optional but it is winter so it is cold)boardshorts, rashvests (optional, helps keep warm), a towel and a gold coin donation for the barbeque and beer. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also a good idea. It is unlikely you'll be soaked, but it is a water sport!
Transport:
If your living on campus or just plain lost?
Meet outside Fisher Library at 8:45am on the day.
By Train, get off at Wynyard, and catch the following buses at the location shown on map (in photos, about 5 minutes walk from the station). Ask the driver for a ticket to Rose Bay.
What ever sport or activity you do, the chances are that there is some special jargon for describing things. Sailing is no different and it has it's fair share. Part of learning to sailing is just getting to know the jargon so that you can at least talk to talk (or know what people are talking about) even if you are learning to walk. This glossary of jargon describes most things and is a good place to start.
