Sailing Dinner and Drinks

Sailing is great! but mixing with awesome sailors is better. We know that people have been laden with work this semester, and may find it hard to make it to the weekend sail days. So we're holding a dinner and drinks event during the week for everyone to catchup. Friends, prospective sailors, all welcome.

At this point, were looking to hold something in Week 9 or thereabouts, during the week, at this point on say, tuesday, but this is very preliminary and suggestions are most welcome. Please post them on the facebook event wall.

7:00pm- Converge on Dining Location
9:00pm- Move to bar
11:00pm- end (its a weeknight)

Venue: Manning Bar (and grill)
Date: Tuesday 23rd of September (Week 9)
Time: 7:00pm-11:00pm

Saturday the 6th Sailing (Week 6) Wet & Windy CANCELED!

Unfortunately once again due to the weather we have decided to canceled sailing on saturday. This is a sad thing as there is a special Tasar day on down at the club with instruction from coaches.

While at this point there is no plans for Sunday, continue to check here for any changes.

Hopefully next week will offer something better.

Saturday the 30th Saililng (Week 5)

The lack of sailing last weekend was a unfortunate and unavoidable result of the adverse weather conditions.

Barring any drastic changes, the weather for this Saturday is shaping up nicely with winds a managable 5-12 knots. See everyone down there at 10:30am!

Australian University Sailing - 2009 Team Racing

After much talk and discussion, university sailing has been approved as a sport to join the 2010 Australian University Games in Perth. This is a great development for university sailing in Australia and will allow for the continued development of the sport in the 18+ category.

University Games - Sailing Championship (Teams Racing & Match Racing)
The 2010 Australian University Games will be held in Perth between the 25th of September and the 2nd of October. The new championship is split into the disciplines of Teams Racing and Match Racing. Saturday the 23rd Sailing (Week 4) Wet & Windy!

Last week we had a good turn out down at the club on another beautiful Sydney day. Everyone who came down got to go for a sail and enjoy the harbour. We did not manage to squeeze in a BBQ but a group still made it round for a quick Thai.

Unfortunately, this week is not looking so optimistic. The weather is looking wet and windy. Despite sailing being dependent on these two elements of nature, too much of either can make the experience less enjoyable. For this reason we don't think it's worth going out!

The weather prediction for Saturday has remained quite constant at 18-25 knots for most of this week so the chance of a change is unexpected.

Very sorry if you were looking forward to getting out but weather is weather and thats the way it is.

Hope the weather is good next week and to see you then!

Saturday of Week 2 9/8/08 Sailing

Our Open Day for Second Semester was an unequivocal success! At least 25 potential members attended and we welcomed 6 new members. Unfortunately, the weather did not permit a sail, but we had a nice barbeque, meet n' greet and use of the simulator.

The forecast for this coming saturday appears to be ideal for beginners, with lighter winds predicted throughout the day (less than 10 knots).
For all new members, we will be meeting at the club from around 10:00am to start rigging up the boats.

Be at Fisher at 9am if you're unsure of how to reach the club.

Hope to see you all there Saturday!

Sailing Jargon Glossary

What ever sport or activity you do, the chances are that there is some special jargon for describing things. Sailing is no different and it has it's fair share. Part of learning to sailing is just getting to know the jargon so that you can at least talk to talk (or know what people are talking about) even if you are learning to walk. This glossary of jargon describes most things and is a good place to start.

(Important things include a * )

AFT The back of the boat.

ASTERN Behind the boat.

BEAM Bars that hold the two hulls apart; widest part of the boat.

*BEAT To sail upwind or into the wind

*BOOM Pole extending horizontally from the mast, attached to the bottom of the mainsail and is used to help pull the sail in and out.

*BOW The front of the boat.

BOWSPRIT A small pole that comes out from the front of the boat and used to hold the gennaker in place.

COCKPIT Hollowed out space where the crew sits when the hull is out of the water.

CREW The competitors.

Sailing Saturday 24th

DSC05493smalest.JPGReport on Saturday,
The day went well. We finally got the fiberglass onto Milkshake and Destruction after preparing the base over the last 2 weeks. When we returned from the sailing it had strengthened up but was still a little "tacky" presumably cause its a bit to cold for the resin, but is should be harden up by next weekend

We tried to make it over to Manily but the wind was too light so
we started out for Watsons Bay. Half way there it was just to light so we
decided to turn back just as the wind did a 180 and started blowing. We
made it round to Watsons Bay for lunch and got back just as the sun disappear. We had the remaining Tasar out and 3 lasers.

2 windsurfers also went out but didn't come round to Wasons Bay for lunch.

Hopefully next week there will be more wind but during the winter, this is the standard.

Sailing Saturday 17th

Sailing as usual down at WSC from 10.30 on Saturday

The weather is looking interesting at this point. The last few weeks, the wind has been very light but it does not look like it should be a problem with the forecast between 15-20 knots. If your going down make sure you check the weather before as the low pressure system may change things quite quickly.

Hope everyone has a good one.

First fundraiser is a SUCCESS

Image085edit.jpgToday we had our first fund raiser and it was a total success.

We started at around 12pm with 25 boxes or 300 Doughnuts. At first it seemed as if the boxes were not going anywhere but after a bit of a push, we were soon in business.

After a bit of a confrontation with Manning management we were restricted to our table on the opposite side of the road to Manning but with the help of our trademark hats and some screaming we managed to sell everything with a grand profit of $318.40. It may only be a small amount in the scheme of things but it’s a step in the right direction and one closer to our new boat.

So thanks to everyone who stopped to buy a doughnut or drink.

Special thanks to everyone who helped, Daniel (the pick up), Alex, Vicky, Mike, Tom and most importantly Johnson who organised it all.

Best Customer of the day goes to ALEX who is running for union board tomorrow (Wednesday), who bought an amazing 7 Doughnuts, one at a time. So VOTE (1) ALEX!!

Saturday Past

DSC06175smaller.JPGThanks everyone who came down, it was a really nice day out despite there being limited wind. We got underway with the repairs to Destruction so it should be back out soon. There are a whole lot more photos up on our gallery as well as on the face book group so have a look.

This Tuesday (13th) we are having our first fund raising day by selling Krispy Kremes. We will be based around Manning, Engineering, Wentworth, Merewether as well as having some roamers.

At the moment, the number of people helping out is quite limited so if your free from 11.30, it would be great if you could help out. If your busy then be sure to stop by and buy a Krispy Kreme. To get involved or just find out where we are, contact Johnson.

Saturday the 3rd Sailing

Last weekend we had an amazing sail round to Watsons Bay for a few beers and lunch. It was a perfect day on the harbour.

This weekend could potentially be the same so come down from 10.30 and get out on the water.
