UNSW & USYD Joint Fun Regatta -

Windsurfers and Sailors,

UNSW Windsurfing Club and Sydney Uni Sailing Club are teaming up for the first time to create a joint Regatta for windsurfing and sailing! The event will be a one day event held in Botany Bay and will allow everyone of all abilities to try their hand at racing. For those who have raced before this will be a great opportunity to show off your stuff in a social environment. While the race is important, participating in the event is as much a part everything. This is the first race event that we have organised and will give us some experience of what to expect for the Sydney Uni Regatta in 2009. For this reason, the event will be relaxed with the emphasis on fun.

To cater for all needs, there will be different categories:
Windsurfing: Racing, Free-style manoeuvre, Rigging-&-Sailing, and Triangle Racing.
Sailing: Laser Standard, Laser Radial

Competitors will be able to enter the categories they wish, up to their experience level.

University of Sydney students must be members of the Sydney Uni Sailing Club to compete. Contact the club if this needs to be arranged.

Drinks, lunch and BBQ dinner are all included. And we will party after the event, of course...
So book yourself in NOW by putting deposits on the usual account for UNSW students or by calling tom for sydney Uni students. Everyone has to be member of one of the club (insurance...). The cost is 35$ for participants and 20$ if you just want to come for the evening BBQ and party. Bargain !

Exam Madness!

The past semester has been full of successes for the Sailing Club. From the beginning of the year, we started with some ideas and the basic foundations. Now we have a fully functioning club with many events and programs to service our growing membership base. We are currently preparing our Budget for 09 and Annual Report which have created a perfect opportunity to review our successes and areas of further development. Our plan for 2009 is even more ambitious than 2008 but the lessons from this year and structure we have build should make it achievable. The partnership we are building with UNSW Windsurfing Club and 2009 Uni Regatta will allow us to spread our clubs activities so that university sailing can be re-built.

With University exams until late November sailing is going to be quite for a while but as its summer, we will be out on the water as soon as they are over. For the members in Sydney over the break, we will continue to sail and organise events for next year.

Good luck with the exams and hope to see you on the water soon!

01/11/2008 - 20:00
Etc/GMT+10

After the success of the trip to Hawks Nest, we are keen to continue the form. While this event will not be as large as the last, we hope to find a new location that is closer to Sydney that will allow us to develop events which are more accessible. This event will also being used to test a potential venue for our first Inter-University Competition against UNSW.

If your free and keen for a weekend away, join us on Pittwater, just a 1.5 hours north of Sydney for a weekend of water sports, Sailing and Windsurfing. As the event is close to Sydney, there will be no car pooling (so organise your own transport, bus etc) which saves money. The cost is $30, which includes lunch sandwich and the evening BBQ.

Places are limited to 25 so get in quick!
If you have any questions, get in contact in the usual way via email

First Away Trip is a success!

With a group numbering some 42 people it was always going to be hard to disappoint, and disappoint we didn't! Everybody managed to have a great time on the water, with our tasar and 2 lasers, as well as a fleet of UNSW Windsurfers. Those especially keen to surf managed to attract the attention of sharks on both mornings...nice! As promised the action on shore was as good as on the water and with amazing food prepared by a small group of hard workers.

For those that didn't manage to join us on this trip, there won't be any more overnight trips this semester, but please do join us in 2009.

A link to photos will be posted shortly.

Getaway Weekend, Hawks Nest - Leaving Today!

This weekend there will be no sailing down at Rose Bay as we are moving the club for the weekend up to Hawks Nest, north of Newcastle. We have had an amazing response and are expecting an amazing 41 people to join in on the shenanigans. Places have closed due to the number of spaces available in the houses but there is another trip planned for next month so if you missed out and wanted to join, dont stress. These events should become a norm at the club for the future and will provide a great way of developing the club. As well as the regatta being planned for next year, we are also discussing a water sports competition against UNSW for later this year.

With the weather looking good, it should be an amazing weekend. If your staying in Sydney for the weekend and still want to go sailing, check out the Crew Search forum. There are lots of boats still needing crew for weekend racing so find a ride.

Sailing - Saturday the 10th of October

We’re back after the tragedy that was last weekend’s weather. All reports point to mild winds (11-15 knot range), sunshine (a low probability of showers in the early evening) and very light chop. Let’s make the most of this opportunity by beginning rigging at 10, as sailing will be transferred up the coast to Hawk’s Nest next weekend (in association with the UNSW Windsurfing Club). Limited vacancies are still available, for event details view lower on this page or the facebook event.

Check out The CREW SEARCH FORUM

We have recently had a whole lot more posting on our crew search forum with boats looking for crew. They are looking for experienced and non experienced people to crew in some of the events that are coming up, this weekend and ongoing.

There is a boat doing the Hobart and a boat doing the Hong Kong Vietnam race. Lots of choice!

If you want to go sailing this weekend, this is a great place to start so have a look!!!

EVENT!! = Sailing/Windsurfing Roadtrip to Hawk's Nest!

Windsurfingdinnersmall.jpgThe University of Sydney Sailing Club is finally stepping up to a whole new level. In the second weekend of October, we will be, in association with the UNSW Windsurfing Club, be travelling to the sunny and palm-filled beaches of Hawks Nest, a mere 3 hours north of Sydney.

The idea is to travel to the area with 3 boats, as well as windsurfers supplied by the UNSW Windsurfing Club and have a general good drunken time over 2 days (and some sailing).

Estimated cost is in the region of $100 total, with about $25 for petrol (total round trip figure), figure insurance is being negotiated (under $20)

The sum of around $100 includes EVERYthing, including a ridiculous amount of food/booze, the accommodation, equipment (limited amount of wetsuits avaliable, please email/call to check).

Please come for the fun/sun and meet some very nice/cool people from our sister organization at UNSW Windsurfing.

Yachting NSW Affliliated Club Status - Granted

YachtingNSWLOGOSMALL.jpgOn Tuesday the 23rd, the Board of Yachting NSW met. On their agenda was our application to become an Affiliated club of their organisation.

The affiliation means that our organisations share common goals and means that we should be able to cooperate in the near future.

Saturday the 27th Sailing and Update

We're back on as usual after a break last weekend. The forecast looks extremely favorable at this point, but as usual, is a bit early to tell at this point in the week.

We had an extremely successful inaugural social event on Tuesday, a great turnout, thanks to all those who came and to all those who didn't, consider coming next time.

Some of our members joined the UNSW Windsurfing Club on a windsurfing trip up the coast to Hawks Nest last weekend. This was extremely generous of them and a great time for all involved. Our clubs are looking forward to a promising relationship in the future with joint events in planning. Stay posted on this exciting development!

Saturday the 17th Sailing Cancelled - Sorry!

Hey guys, we would like to apologise to all members affected, but we are unable to hold sailing this weekend due to a lack of qualified club personnel being avaliable to supervise it. It appears that the mid-semester exams have gotten the best of us at this point, but we are extremely optimistic about being able to resume sailing next weekend.

Cheers and have a good weekend!

Saturday the 13th Sailing (Week 7)

Sailing on this weekend! See everyone down at 10:30am. There have been warnings (of a low probability) of a thunderstorm, although not till dusk or later in the evening, so we shouldn't have any problems. The wind forecast is mid strength, in the 13-17 knot range.
