Wednesday Sailing School

P3070502modi.JPGThanks to everyone who came down on Saturday for the BBQ and sail. While things were a bit slow at first with rigging boats, this will get faster as you all learn what need to be done. One of the Lasers that was used on Saturday was not actually owned by our club. The one used was one of two newer Lasers that will be purchased in the next week or so and used in club racing on Sundays. This coming Saturday (14th) there will not be any club sailing at WSC as the boats are going north on the weekend trip. If you have not already, make sure you join our facebook group to stay up to date with the club activities; Facebook

To get to Rose Bay there are a number of options when coming from uni.
Walk to Redfern or Central Station and catch the train to Edgecliff on the bondi junction line. At edge cliff, get the (324, or any bus that goes to Watson's bay) bus from the top floor to Rose Bay. The club is next to the park and on the water side of the Rose Bay RSL. Look for the masts. (fastest rout)

Catch the bus to Town Hall, walk along Market St to Elisabeth St where the Eastern suburb buses stop. Catch the 324 or any bus that goes to Watson's bay and stop at Rose Bay.

Catch the bus to Circular key and catch the ferry to Rose Bay (most scenic but most expensive)

Description
CESAR NOMINATION!
Best Documentary

Festival-goers with a love of the outdoors and stories of man vs. nature are bound to be awe-struck by this compelling new documentary. As its eponymous title suggests, it’s the inspiring and moving story of the renowned adventurer Éric Tabarly.

A Gallic naval officer born in 1931, Tabarly set a remarkable string of speed and distance records in his sailboats, each of which he christened 'Pen Duick.' He was twice champion of the OSTAR, winning in 1964, for which he was awarded the Légion d'honneur. An imposing figure physically, yet humble and discrete in demeanour, he tragically went missing in the Irish Sea in June 1998, en route to Scotland's Fife Regatta...

Director Pierre Marcel and producer Jacques Perrin (Travelling Birds) chart the sailor's incredible life journey and his mysterious disappearance. Those entranced by the recent documentary Deep Water will find much to enjoy in this film, memorable in particular for its stunning cinematography and a new score by award-winning composer Yann Tiersen (Amelie).

First Sail Day - 7th March!

Are you a new member? Haven't been down sailing in a while?
Join us at Woolhara this weekend for our first weekend sail day!

Your welcome to sign-up on the day if you haven't already.

We will have friendly senior members (including qualified instructors) on hand to take you out on larger boats or teach you how to sail your very own!

We will be running a barbeque all day with sausages and vegetable alternatives.

I would like to apologize in advance if we do not get as much sailing in on the day as you would like, as our objective is to get to know everyone and introduce our facilities. We are also a bit shortstaffed in terms of skippers that can help show people around in our boats so please have faith for the future, as this is our first ever sail day of the year.

What to bring: boardshorts/swim trunks/bikini bottoms, rashvests (optional, helps with sun exposure), a towel and a gold coin donation for the barbeque and beer. Sunscreen and sunglasses are also a good idea. It is unlikely you'll be soaked, but it is a water sport!

2009 Australian University Regatta - April 15th to 17th

Our Sailing club is now the only university sailing club in Sydney still active. While once there was a thriving inter-university competition, now there is nothing and as a result, there are large numbers of students who while having the interest, no longer have the infrastructure to support them. While our club is still building its self to provide sailing for University of Sydney students, we feel it is important that the other universities in Sydney and surrounding areas are given the option to participate. In order to meet this need and demand, we plan to host regattas where by any university age sailors can enter and partake in an event that is competitive, sociable but most importantly fun. There is no Uni Games for sailing any more in Australia but we hope that an event like this could be a step in the direction towards its re-establishment.

The Re-birth of Australian University Sailing

As seen at www.nsw.yachting.org.au

Despite Australian sailors achieving success around the world, the long term sustainability of the sport is uncertain. Youth sailing has grown over the last ten years, but it has only taken place in the age groups below 17 years. Many sailing clubs have observed a decline in the number of 18 to 30 year old sailors from their club events. For any young person, this time is associated with finishing school, leaving home, getting your first job or going on to higher education. Prior to this time, most young people’s participation in sailing is funded by committed parents willing to meet the costs, but once they leave home, sailing stops without support.

The decline of university sailing over the past 10 years has not helped sailing for young adults. Many universities once had clubs that provided both an entry point for students into the sport as well as the means for participation in class and university competitions. The universities and clubs also provided support for competitive sailors who represented their states and Australia. While some universities still provide financial assistance for competitive sailors, this is not done through a university club.

The University of Sydney remains as the last university with a surviving club in NSW and one of only a few active university clubs in Australia. The Sydney Uni Club almost collapsed in 2007 but since 2008 has slowly been rebuilt, establishing a strong membership base and holding a number of successful events. Club equipment has been refurbished bringing it back to working order allowing students to get out on the water, even on a limited budget. While the boats have been successfully raced, to be seriously competitive, their replacement will be necessary.

The experiences of 2008 by The Sydney Uni Club have proven that there is a need for university sailing to support the sport and maintain sustainability. As a first step towards the redevelopment, the first university regatta for a number of years will be held in mid April. This event will be open to all classes and will take place under the yard stick system. Further details of the event will be circulated soon through all relevant media.

With the collapse of the other university clubs, the true number of sailors in universities is unknown. To remedy this, Yachting NSW is supporting a national database that allows for the registration of university sailors. The database allows event information to be easily distributed and can provide the bases for the establishment of new university clubs around the country. To register send an email to andrew.cribb@nsw.yachting.org.au with your contact details including Name, Address, Phone Number, Email address and University.

In late 2008, The Sydney Uni Sailing Club established a foundation to aid in fundraising for the purchase of new equipment that will allow the club to remain sustainable into the future. While currently the Sydney Uni Club is the only club in NSW, the clubs aim is not only to develop itself but university sailing in general.

University clubs are run by students who learn on the job. Many of the skills associated with running a club are transferable into everyday life. Building clubs not only grows a sport by increasing its accessibility but creates challenges for its committees that if over come bring great reward. In the future, the next generation of management committees will build on what is already established but currently the clubs are starting from scratch so have no precedent to go by. For this reason, having the support of the general sailing community who can provide important guidance will be critical for success.

Happy New Year!!!

To Celebrate, lets go sailing!!

From 10.30 we will be down at the Club to get rigged up and go sailing. If you are still to join, bring your membership fees and we will sign you up.

Hope to see you!

Christmas Greetings

The year has been full of many successes that have allowed our club to grow significantly as well as put into action plans for the further growth in the near future. 2008 was good, 2009 will be better.

This weekend, the clubs management as well as celebrating the clubs success will also be celebrating a number of personal events. As a result, there will not be any sailing on Saturday or Sunday. While the weather looks promising it will have to wait a few more weeks till the festivities are a bit quieter, then we can start it all again.

Hope you all have a very merry Christmas and Happy New Year and look forward to see you all soon in 2009.

UNSW/USYD Social Regatta - Report

On Saturday the 29th, The UNSW Windsurfing Club and The Syndey Uni Sailing Club held a joint social regatta event. There was a strong turn out with everyone participating in the race event no matter their experience level. Despite threats of rain, the weather was perfect down at Yarra Bay which provided the perfect environment for such an event.

The first race made use of all the club Lasers in a relay event which grouped experienced sailors with non experienced. After 6 laps of the circuit, Sydney Uni won the event half a lap spare.

Second was a social event which got everyone in on the action at the same time. This is something that can be difficult when boats are limited. Despite Lasers being designed for one person, we managed to squeez 6 and 7 people on to our three boats. This race was immense as everyone had to work together to make the boats sail around the circuit. Surprisingly, the boats managed quite a speed and finished the long circuit in only a few minutes. The finish came down to the wire as the UNSW and Sydney boat were within seconds of each other. This race was again won by Sydney Uni making the score 2:0 to Sydney uni.

The next was a competition between the Lasers and the Windsurfers. Here again, everyone despite their experience level was included. With 4 people to each Laser to make the race fair against the slower One Design Windsurfer boards. After a controversial start and mark rounding, Olivier Zemb from UNSW was first back to make the score 2:1 to Sydney Uni and the beginning of a UNSW come back.

The next event designed for the learner windsurfers was a test of how long they could stay upright. Both club's competitors tested their balance but the UNSW team came out on top to level the days scores at 2:2

After a massive black cloud appeared on the horizon, it was decided that the racing had to come to an end. All Lasers, Windsurfers and the rescue boat were quickly de-rigged and loaded onto the club trailers as the rain began to poor.

With all the equipment packed away, everyone made their way round to Maroubra Beach for the evening BBQ and drinks. Spechial thanks to the UNSW club for organising the food for the day and managing the payments. The meal as usual was amazing even with the local gas supply being cut off as soon as it was dark. After a regatta report and a number of speeches of thanks, It was decided that the event to maintain unity would be a draw between the two clubs. Champagne was then presented to the relevant club officials and the celebrations continued.

Special thanks to the St Johns Ambulance First aid team who were there to make sure all were safe.

The event was a complete sucess and thank you to everyone who participated. You can see more photos in club gallery.
