Saturday 22nd

The temperature over the last two weekend has been great for sailing and although we are still in the winter months, there is no reason why you cant be out on the water.

This weekend we will be sailing on Saturday from 10am. The wind at this time of the year is best in the morning so we are starting a bit earlier to make use of the best conditions.

Again, if you are yet to join the club, get yourself a SUSF membership ($55) before you come down and then we can sort out your club membership at the club.

Next week we have two events coming up. On Monday night we will be returning to SucBar for another night of fun and then on Friday, we have our next weekend trip away leaving. There is already an event on face book and the full details will be finalised soon so if you want to come, make sure you get in early as spaces are limited.

The final think to keep in mind is the sailing school program. Registration for the course starting on the 4th of September will be opening soon so be ready.

Hope to see you down at the club and if not, at one of the upcoming events!

Sailing Saturday 15th

While the water tempreture may still be cool, we will be down at Woollahra again this saturday from 11am. Last week we managed to send a Tasar and Windsurfer out for a bit of a run about. This week, if numbers are up, we should be able to get some lasers out.

If your coming down, dont forget to being clothes that can get wet, a towl and some warm clothes for after.

We will be collecting membership forms and fees so if your yet to join, make sure you have everything you need. You can get the membership form from the membership page. If you can, pick up a SUSF membership first to cut down on paper work and running around.

Hope to see you.

Sailing Saturday the 8th

On saturday we will be returning to our normal saturday social sailing program. We will begin down at Woollahra Sailing Club from 11am. Come down and join us for a sail. If you are yet to join the club, we will be able to finalise membership details. Depending on how many people we have and the wind conditions, we should also get some windsurfers out. While the weather forcast is looking nice, the water tempreture remains cool so if you can, bring a wetsuit.

Hope to see you down at the club!

In other news, there will be a social night out on Monday (10th). See the face book group for full details.

As you may be able to tell, its all being organised in a bit of a rush but never the less, its going to be amazing as always!!! (Most of the trips are done in the last week so what’s different?)

The cost of the trip is going to be $100 for the weekend which includes the usual, food, alcohol, sailing, windsurfing and everything else to make it a great weekend.

Australian University Teams Racing is here!

Team_Racing_Promoweb.jpgAfter the success of a yard stick fleet racing regatta in April, which attracted 9 universities to Sydney, a teams racing regatta has been announced for the 2nd to the 4th of October. The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club has agreed to provide the venue for the land mark event which represents a rapidly growing movement to establish a University Sailing Championship in Australia. Racing will take place in Pacer dinghies which are well established as a teams racing class.

The regatta earlier in the year began a discussion regarding the future of university sailing in Australia. The event gave some of the best, along with first time racers, the opportunity to come together and compete. The event was sociable and fun while maintaining a competitive edge. All who attended agreed that similar events needed to be developed into some kind of university championship. The general agreement so far has been to build a championship around fleet racing, match racing and teams racing. The fleet racing would be maintained as the most accessible of the three under the yard stick system allowing anyone to compete and participate. Then a more selective regatta program would be run for the teams racing and match racing as clubs and teams are developed in universities.

Most people are first introduced to teaming racing in high school, but as only a small number of schools have sailing as an option, numbers are few. University sailing provides a much broader opportunity for all to take part. College or University teams racing in the US and Europe is very competitive and carries much prestige. The establishment of a championship in Australia that includes the three disciplines will be a big step towards creating a comparable competition. One of the biggest challenges has been cost. Teams racing regattas are not known for being particularly affordable events, but as there are no university teams that can subsidise costs, entry fees will be borne by the students. Despite the evident challenge the entry fee for a 6 to 8 person team will be $600 plus a $500 damage deposit. While this covers the main costs, we are still in need of support from volunteers. If you are an umpire and free to volunteer, it would be great to hear from you.

One of the biggest successes of the April regatta was the network it has created. We now have contact with university sailors in more than 20 universities around the country and while it may be quite a distance for some to come to Sydney for the teams racing, we are confident of a strong turnout. In April the longest travelling time went to the team from Queensland University of Technology but this time it looks like it will go to the University of Western Australia.

For the NOR and other regatta information, go to the Team Racing page above.

Club News Update

Websitetrip1.jpgFirst, Thanks for the group who joined us for the trip up to Lake Macquarie, the house was amazing and really made the weekend a great success. It really is amazing how lucky we are with the weather on our trips as we were served up another exceptional forecast allowing everyone plenty of time on the water. Special note needs to go to Hiroshi and Sam who made great improvements. Sam gets the award for the most time upside down and Hiroshi the most capsizes. Special thanks needs to go to Kaitlyn for finding such an amazing house and Olivia for overseeing purchase of so much food.

The Success of the trip to Lake Macquarie means that it will definitely be joining the frequent destinations list as it really does have it all. For the first trip in Semester II on the 31st of July, expect a Lake Mac return although Hawks Nest may also be in the running if we cannot get the right house.

Since the April Regatta, we have been busy working out what should happen next. There has been various meetings with Yachting Australia and Australian University Sport which resulted in the writing of a proposal which was submitted to these organisations. From this, a new University Sailing Committee is going to be created which will oversee the organisation of an Australian University Sailing Championship. This championship will be based around a Yard Stick Fleet Racing Regatta, Teams Racing and Match Racing. The program should be up and running with its first major event in April 2010 in the form of the fleet racing regatta on the east coast.

Websitetrip2.jpgWhile the organisation of the University Championship is taking place a second event in 2009 is being organised. From the 2nd to the 4th of October, a Teams Racing Regatta will take place from Royal Prince Alpha Yacht Club, north of Sydney. Entry per team/university will be $600 + a $500 damage bond. A full notice of race and entry form will be published soon. If you are interested in being part of the Sydney Uni Team, make your self known once further details are released.

Websitetrip3.jpg
Down at the Club, work is being done on the equipment to get it ready for next semester. Our Shed is also recieving a face lift which should allow us to keep everything more organised and allow us, beleive it or not, to store more equipment down at the club. Two more of the club trailers are also being re-registered for the first time in years. The trailers will allow us to carry more equipment on our trips so that we can make sure eveyone has access to equipment.

Our other big news is that we now have a Windsurfing Officer called Scott!!! Scott is already done an amazing job on the windsurfing gear by working out what is missing and got it all running. We now have 6 complete windsurfer one designs of which a few will be stored on one of the newly registered trailers so they can go traveling with us. If anyone is keen to windsurf, our club now has some great gear! Our club also has a few other boards for the more advanced.

Websitetrip4.jpgLike in first semester, we will also have the sailing school program with Woollahra Sailing Club up and running. This will be great for those who are still learning. By doing a course eairly in the semester, by the time the weather heats up, you will be able to enjoy all our gear.

Lake Macquarie Trip (29th of June - 3rd of July)

It’s been a while since we organised a trip out of Sydney and the weather over the past few weeks has been so poor, there really has not been any incentive to get out on the water but as its the holiday there is no excuse.

On Saturday the 27th everyone/most will be enjoying themselves with the ends of the university semester so on Monday the 29th when you have made your recovery, let go for a drive north!

We are going to rent a house (not camp) so either way we should have a great time no matter what the weather does. The house is on Lake Macquarie with the back garden facing directly on to the water. This will be great for the boats as we will be able to sail from the garden. From the photos, the house is huge so plenty of room for everyone.

See: http://www.theholidayhouse.biz/page1-2-1.html

In Brief -
We will depart Sydney on the 29th and then return 3rd.

The days are very chilled, Its up to you to work out how you spend your time but generally people get up late then spend a few hours sailing with lunch somewhere. In the evening, everyone gets together to cooks, eats and drink! Nothing like a house party!

All accommodation, food, alcohol, sailing etc is included.

The Price for the trip is $140 and must be made 5pm Wednesday 24th June + the form filled in.

NEWS UPDATE - Holiday Road/Sail Trip and Sailing School Dates

P3150303Small.JPGIt’s been a while since we organised a trip out of Sydney and as the weather over the past few weeks has been poor, there really has not been any incentive to get out on the water.

On Saturday the 27th everyone but Sarah will be enjoying themselves with the ends of the university semester. So on Sunday the 28th when you have made your recovery, let go for a drive north!

This is only a basic description to see how many people are interested but the general plan is to drive north with some boats and find a nice camp site for a few days. Depending on how we feel, we may move on further and find a different spot. Usually we are restricted to a weekend trip but as it’s the HOLIDAY the plan is to go for 4 days. The price we are working towards at the moment is approximately $150.

Earlier this semester we went to Wallis Lake, north of Newcastle which was great so this may be a potential location. Even though we are going north, the weather will still be cold, but there is no reason why we can’t rug up and huddle around the camp fire.

So if this basic idea sounds like fun to you, make your mark on our facebook group and we will be back with some more details soon.

In other News...
We have set the dates for next semesters sailing school program. The biggest program will be the level one course.

To give you an idea, the intensive program will introduce students to the language of sailing while on the water students will be given the opportunity handle the dinghies and get use to the sail controls. The course will be made up of 4 x 2hr sessions. We have managed to bring the price down from $298 in semester one after WSC realised how many people we could deliver so I will add that the club member price is great value.

COST: Sailing Club Members: $265, SUSF Members: $285, Non-Members: $300

DATES:
Course 1: Fridays, 1-3pm, 4-25 Sep
Course 2: Saturdays, 1-3pm, 19 Sep-10 Oct
Course 3: Fridays, 1-3pm, 9-30 Oct

WHERE: Woollahra Sailing Club, Rose Bay

ENROLE BY: 1 Sep (Course 1), 16 Sep (Course 2), 6 Oct (Course 3)

We have not opened enrolment yet as it still a long way away but this information will be out when everything is finalised

Sailing Saturday (29th) Not Good?

Weather29thsmall.JPGIt seems the weather gods do not like us as once again its not looking very nice. Sydney Winter sailing is usually really windy or not at all. While the wind looks fine, the rain would not make a day on the harbour the most enjoyable experience. Next weekend we will have to wait and see what happens with the weather. It been ages since we were out on the harbour so will just have to hope that things change.

In other news, there will be a sail/road trip north from the 28th of June until the 2nd of July. We plan to join UNSW for the first part and then continue north to find another nice spot. Full details will be released soon.

The management committee met this week to set out a plan for next semester. The sailing school is back and will be three weekend trips up and down the coast. Dates for these trips will be released soon with planned destinations.

Hope to be out on the water soon.

Saturday 23th of May Sailing

The current forcast for saturday is for between 20 and 30 knots of wind. As much as we would love to be out on the harbour, the wind and weather would not make it very enjoyable. Lets just hope that the weather is a bit better next week and its been ages since we were out! Very sorry about the late notice.

In other news, over the winter break a trip is being organised with more info out soon.
