Late August Trip to Lake Macquarie

The club now has a youtube channel so we will be put up videos after events to keep the memories alive and give all you new members and idea of what we get up to. Check out our newest made by Arnaud Gultier, great job. Most of the footage turned out more like something out of big brother but have a look!

Sailing and Halloween Pub Crawl - Saturday 31st

The semester is over and the only thing between us and the holidays is a few exams.

On Saturday we will be sailing down at WSC from around 11 or 12 and with the weather forecast to be perfect, it should be a nice day on the harbour.

From 7pm at Bar Broadway we will begin our clubs first Pub Crawl. The theme is Halloween so find something scary and hope to see you.

Finally, we will be going on a weekend away trip from the afternoon of Friday the 20th of November. At this point, the plan is to camp but we have not determined our final destination yet. If your interested, join the facebook event and stay tuned for more details when we get closer.

Jessica Watson's Big Journey

This week Jessica Watson left Sydney to sail around the world and become the youngest ever. There has been a lot of publicity around her attempts but this short clip we believe shows a different perspective.

This is one of the greatest challenges anyone can face so good luck and we will be there when you come though the Sydney Heads!

Watson's bay sail!

Date: Saturday, October 24, 2009
Time: 10:00am - 5:00pm
Location: Woolhara

We've taken a long break from Cruising due to the Regatta and the World Masters Games.

Lets get back into it for a few more weekends before the exams are upon us!

A sail around to Watson's bay with fish and chips there is long-overdue, after which we can cruise around the harbour.

As with every cruising weekend, meet at Woolhara at 10am. We will rig up and leave (now that more of us are capable, we should be away in no time) for a sail around before heading into Watson's bay.

The day should end around 5pm, although leaving early is possible as there are buses leaving from Watson's bay.

Bring your friends and wetsuits!

All this is weather permitting.

Regatta and Club Sailing

Well the regatta has come and gone and we are almost at the end of the semester again. Thanks to all the teams who made the trip. The winner of the 2009 Australian University Teams Racing Regatta was the team from The University of Queensland. They set a high standard and showed us how it’s done. Congratulations.

A full Regatta report is on its way. Photos at this point are available though the Australian University Sailing Events group on facebook.

There will not be any Club sailing for at least the next 2 weeks due to the World Masters Games which is being run out of Woollahra Sailing Club. If you have any free time next week, it may be worth taking a trip down to the club just to see the spectacle. There will be some big international names from many disciplines of sailing who have given up their usual boats for Lasers and Tasars.

In the lead up the final few weeks of semester, we wish everyone the best with your final few assessments and would like to remind everyone, that the summer holidays are close!

Beach Party and Regatta

beachparty2.jpgAfter three months of a endless stream of email, facebook messages and phone calls, the 2009 Australian University Teams Racing Regatta is finally here. The regatta will take place from the 2nd to the 3rd at Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Newport, about an hours drive north of Sydney.

We will have 11 teams from 7 universities;

  • University of Western Australia
  • University of Queensland
  • Queensland University of Technology
  • New South Wales University (2 Teams)
  • University of Technology Sydney
  • University of Sydney (3 Teams)
  • Australian National University (2 Teams)

Even if you are not one one of the teams, everyone is welcome to come and have a look. We will have a viewing boat which will have plenty of room for everyone to see the racing. On Friday (2nd) night, all crews will go to the Arms Hotel in Newport for dinner and drinks.

Saturday is the main social event in the form of a beach party at Mona Vale Surf Club from 7:30pm. Tickets will be $12 on the door and will include pizza and a bar tab if we have the numbers so bring your friends. If you have any questions, call Liv on 0437277820. Hope to see you.

As the regatta is on, there will not be any sailing down at WSC this weekend but its worth trying to come up and have a look at the racing.

  • NO SAILING, Saturday 26th

Well its been a crazy week of weather! First the dust storm on Wednesday and now the forecast for Saturday and Sunday is 25 to 30 knots. One question is will there be red dust again?

As a result, we will NOT be sailing on either days.

This also applied for the sailing course that runs on Saturdays.

Next weekend, we will also be taking a break from weekend sailing as we have the Australian University Teams Racing Regatta taking place up at the Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club at Newport. USYD is going to have three teams so we wish this group all the best as they take on students from New South Wales, Western Australia, Queensland and the ACT. We will have more news soon.

In terms of a heads up, we will most likely be having a Pub Crawl on October 10th so keep you diary free.

Hope you all enjoy the holiday brake and hope to see you when we are all back.

USYD Teams Racing Meeting on Tuesday 6PM -

Just a reminder that the MEETING that will set out how the USYD teams are organised will be on Tuesday from 6pm at International House.

If you have emailed Tom Brewer with your details, you need to be at this meeting if you would like to be part of one of the teams. Preferences will go to people who attend the meeting. If you can’t make it for reasons out of your control, email tom.w.brewer@hotmail.com to confirm he has your contact details and your experience.

For those who are part of the teams, remember we are having a training session at WSC this coming Saturday (19th). We will have 12 boats on the water so we can have multiple flights operating.

If you have a dinghy/RIB that you can bring, it would be great as we are in need of some change boats/start/finish, other. The UNSW teams will also be joining us so we can get a taste of what’s in store.
Entry forms for the regatta are due on Friday so we need to get everything finalised Tuesday. The other urgent item is accommodation which needs booking.

if you have teams racing experience but will not be able to attend the regatta, you are welcome to join us.

    See you Tuesday night!

Weekend Away - Trip 2 (28th to 30th August) Report

For the lucky 20 who were the first to get their deposits in for the trip north, it was a weekend to remember with great weather, food, drink, relaxing, socializing, windsurfing and most importantly sailing. Most of the group gathered at University of Sydney at 5pm to be crammed into three small cars along with all of the gear and food. With all of the caotic packing the cars didn’t end up leaving for Lake Macquarie until 8 pm. Whereas the car with the booze made it to the house at 8, everything always goes a bit smoother when alcohol is involved! Allthough some of the boys found it hard to find the right house, oops. A few sailors even had to brave the train all the way north. The house alone was worth the trip, it was more like two houses combined into one and it even had two kitchens. Once everyone arrived, the rooms or more importantly the beds were quickly claimed and the evenings fun and games begun.

On Saturday morning, we all had breakfast and began to prepare for the day of sailing and windsurfing ahead. The lake house provided the best access to the water since it was literally only 5 feet back. The boats and windsurfers were quickly rigged and everyone got to get out on the lake and enjoy the strong winds. Some sailors even needed to be saved by our windsurfers, a first! We even ended up having a special visitor or mascot in which we named Lachlan! By the way Lachlan is a beautiful dog.

P8290042web.JPGSaturday evening, after a long day of sun and sailing there was a huge cookup, thanks to the trusty cooks Olivia, Nicole, Kait, and yes even Tom! Everything you could think of ended up on our dinner table, lasgna, pasta, garlic bread, roasted potatoes, veggies, salad, and bbq. With everyones help in clean up the partying quickly began. Again another thanks is due to Nicole, Sarah, and Tom for making a wonderful punch! Everyone socialized either out by the lake, inside. The night had a few bumbs along the way but it all ended well with everyone in their beds content after a great days sailing.

Sunday followed in much the same way with sun, wind and a lot of sailing and windsurfing. Late afternoon cleanup started and the house was made spectacular. Around 5pm the boats and windsurfers were packed up and preparation for the return trip began.Tradition of the sailing weekend tug of war with the stuck mast started and photos were taken when the most miraculous thing occurred and it actually started to move! But in the end it was still stuck, maybe the next weekend away. More sailors ventured their way back into the city by train while a few stayed to soak up the last of the sun and wait for the cars to be completely ready.

While everything above may seem like a complete cliché, the weekend and the weather was quite perfect. Special thanks must go to all of the organizers of the University of Sydney Sailing group and to all the members who joined us and contributed to making it a great weekend. The next weekend trip / reggatta will be taking place over the weekend of the 2nd of October but keep you eye out for more information closer to the date.

USYD Team Racing Meeting (Tueday 15th, 6pm)

For everyone who has replied to Tom Brewer's messages regarding the USYD team for the October regatta, we are having a meeting on Tuesday the 15th to discuss the details and establish who will be in what team. The meeting will take place at International House (96 City Rd, Chippendale) from 6pm. There will then be a training day on Saturday the 19th where all the teams can get out on the water and have a few practice races. If you’re going to be on one of the teams, it’s extremity important for you to attend this training session on the Saturday as this is the only cretin time we have on the water before the regatta. Look forward to meeting you all.

09 Australian University Teams Racing almost here

On the 1st of October, university sailors from around Australia will begin to arrive at Sydney’s Northern Beaches for the 2009 Australian University Teams Racing Regatta. The Royal Prince Alfred Yacht Club will be providing the venue for the regatta from the 2nd to the 4th of October which is only the second university sailing event for almost a decade. The event has received Yachting Australian and Australian University Sport’s sanctioning which represents a significant development for the sport in targeting university students.

Although it has never been in the league of the US and European university sailing, there was once a competitive competition between many of the Australian universities. Unfortunately almost all the clubs that once existed have disappeared and with it, the competition leaving the need to create a new competition from scratch. Australian University Sport and Yachting Australia have begun the process of formally introducing sailing into the annual Australian University Games.

Teams’ racing in Australia has predominately been dominated by high school sailing with only a small number continuing into the national competition. The development of a national university teams racing championship seems to be the logical step for providing young sailors with a pathway so they can stay involved with team sailing and maintain their connection with the sport when many drop off. While many sailors at university compete for their local clubs, teams racing will provide a great way to get teams linked up in universities to help the establishment of new clubs. Since the April fleet racing regatta, two new clubs have been re-established in Sydney by the University of New South Wales and University of Technology Sydney. These two clubs are now preparing competitive teams for the teams racing regatta and will establish other local events between clubs.

The entry deadline for the Teams Racing regatta is September 18th leaving less than two weeks for teams to get organised.
