End of Semester Weekend Away (June 25th - 27th)

The end of semester weekend away saw 11 head down to Jervis Bay for a weekend of fun. Despite the forecast of rain all weekend, we had non and instead spent most of the time in t-shirts on the beach or out on the bay enjoying amazing sun. So much for the middle of winter!

A whole lot of photos have been updated to the online album so check them out! There are also a load of photos from earlier in the semester sailing down at WSC and the Anzac Day German Beach Party. Its been a great semester! We promise that although the photos may seem social focused, a lot of sailing took place with period of fun kept to a minimum.

Winter Series 2010

The 2010 Winter Series will commence on Sunday 23 May with first started scheduled for 10am. The move to morning racing aims to make the most of the typically more consistent morning breeze and to avoid the large CYCA winter series fleet.

What better way to spend a Sunday morning than an early breakfast at the club followed by a couple of hours of racing before a nice hot shower and a beverage and snack for Lori's Cafe. There will be a minor prize giving in the cafe at the end of each days racing.

If you would like to use on of the club boats, email us at usydsailing@gmail.com to discuss details. You must be a racing member of the club to make use of this option.

If you dont have one, make sure you bring a change of warm dry clothes and dont forget the hot showers.

After what is almost a year, our club weeksite photo gallery has been updated with loads of nice photos from the last years events. Make sure you check it out by clicking on the tab above. The image above is the team who went to the 2010 Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta in April.

>>All positions will be on notice at the AGM<<

If you’re interesting in becoming part of the committee or just want to hear what’s been going on and what’s in store, make sure you come along.

Our club has played a critical role in the re-development of university sailing in this country. This year the University games will include sailing which is the direct result of two regattas we hosted last year. If you want to be part of this or help organise weekend trips away and parties, we want you!!

Sailing is a great activity because it can be a sport as well as a way of life. We try to blend a bit of both!

The club is student run and could not operate without your help, so get involved!

2010 Australian University Sailing Events (By: Kingsley Pursch, Monash Uni)

The 2010 “Zhik” Australian University Fleet Racing Regatta was held on April 8-10, hosted by Great Lakes Sailing Club (GLSC) at Forster, NSW. 20 student teams from 5 universities (UNSW, Sydney Uni, UTS, Monash and RMIT) attended the event. This unique event included a representation from international students from Hong Kong, Singapore, France and Italy. Tasars, lasers and NS 14s were the best represented classes and competitors were split into two fleets based on the VCY rating system. The sailing was balanced with social dinners and beach parties each night where the competitors managed to squeeze in a few drinks after long days on the water.

Thanks to the members of Great Lakes Sailing Club who generously donated their time to host the regatta. Thanks also to the event sponsors Zhik, Ashby Sails, Australian Tasar Association and Australian High Performance Catamarans (AHPC), who provided prizes and trophies for the event.

Over three days of competition 7 races were completed in a range of conditions to test every competitor. Day one provided 15-20 knots from the South-West for races 1 and 2 with gusts over 20 knots which was an exciting start to the regatta. 3 races were held on day 2 in perfect racing conditions with a building breeze that started at 5-8 knots then increased to 15 knots by the third race. Quite a few people took advantage of the great conditions by swapping crews and boats to cruise around the lake after racing and simply enjoy being on the water. The final day was a perfect sunny day, but the wind was light. Two races kicked off just after midday in a North East sea breeze which tried its best to build, but didn’t manage to build over 6-8 knots before gradually backing out.

At the end of the series it was the University of New South Wales who won the overall point score to take home the major team trophy. The overall championship trophy was awarded based on a combination of results and participation. We look forward to building the momentum of the university fleet racing event and hopefully other universities can challenge UNSW for the trophy next year.

Colin Cheng from UNSW won the monohull division on his laser full rig, while Brett Goodall from TeamMONASH won the cats and skiffs division on the AHPC Viper. There were 6 female skippers in fleet and this division was won by Elizabeth Yin from Sydney Uni (laser radial) ahead of Tara McCall and Alice Walker from UNSW (NS 14) and Cait Davies from TeamMONASH (laser radial).

The next event on the university sailing calendar is the world match racing championships in Greece, where a team from UTS will represent Australia. This will be followed by the major university sailing event for 2010 – the Australian University Games (AUG) at Perth in September 2010. The sailing program at AUG will include match racing on foundation 36 yachts and teams racing on pacers. Teams of 6 to 8 students can represent their university in Australia’s largest annual multi-sport event, which attracts between 6000 and 8000 university students annually from 42 universities.

University Fleet Regatta 2010

Well after hundreds of emails, phone calls and all other forms of communication we finally have a regatta. On Wednesday (7th) a convoy of cars will depart WSC for Great Lakes Sailing Club just south of Forster. Racing starts on Thursday afternoon with all registration completed before 11am.

Most people will be camping next to the club which should set the perfect atmosphere for the regatta. On Thursday night after racing, there will be a welcome BBQ and then on Friday night, the main social evening event will take place in the form of a party! Dress loud!

As the regatta will be taking place under yard stick, we have already had a large number of different classes of boats register. The largest classes will be the Laser and Tasar fleets which will include some world class sailors to ensure a high standard of competition.

If you’re still considering coming, it’s not to late, pack you boat, tent and hit the road. The Uni Games will include sailing later in the year but this event is the student organised regatta for students.

Hope to see you!

Club socail sailing will return on Saturday 17th down at WSC.
