Schizophrenic weather, strong competition, outstanding results.
These are the hallmarks of a memorable regatta and the recent NSW State Teams Racing Championships, held over the 28th and 29th of April and hosted by Woollahra Sailing Club had it all. The regatta was much anticipated following the successful running of the Teams Racing Nationals by WSC in 2011, at which USYD had 3 teams and team 1 came 3rd overall.

Sydney University put up 2 teams:

2011 University Games

Story by Lovelle D'Souza.

Over the mid-semester break the UniGames circus descended on the Gold Coast yet again.

Seven Sydney University sailors, from left to right Alex South, Nick Howe, Josie Roper (manager), Scott Sydney, Rohan Pethayagoda, Lovelle D’Souza & Jeronimo Harrison arrived on the Sunday, eager to contest the Teams Racing event; the first time it was officially a part of the Games and contributed to our university's overall win.

Alex South - Off to China

19 year old Sydney Uni Elite Program scholarship holder Alexandra South has been selected in the Australian University Sport (AUS) sailing team to compete at the 2011 Summer Universiade, which takes place from August 11 – 23 in Shenzhen, China.

South, who is studying a Bachelor of Political, Economic and Social Sciences, is also a member of the Australian sailing squad.

South competes in the radial class and currently ranks 80th in the ISAF world rankings. She has taken part in one World Cup event this season where she finished 29th at the Sail Melbourne International Regatta.

The selection of South takes Sydney University's athlete representation at the 2011 Summer Universiade to nine. The other eight athletes are: Anneliese Rubie, Lachlan Renshaw, James Nipperess (Athletics), Nick Davies (Fencing), Philip Grenfell (Cycling), Katie-Rae Ebzery (Basketball), Scott Nicholson and Lachlan Hollis (Water Polo).

Sailors gunning for London 2012 and beyond

Four Sydney University Elite Athlete Program scholarship holders - Krystal Weir, Elizabeth Yin, William Ryan and Alexandra South - are doing all they can to make their 2012 London Olympic Games dream a reality.

At just 24, Krystal Weir will be gunning for her second Olympic Games appearance in 2012. Weir , who is studying a Master of Physiotherapy, finished a creditable 10th overall at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in the Yngling class. She is now competing in the Radial class where she currently ranks 26th in the International Sailing Federation (ISAF) world rankings.

Weir has also recently been selected to represent Australia for a 2012 Olympic Games test event. The event will be held at the Olympic venue (Weymouth) from July 31 to August 13.

Her stand-out performance of the season came recently during the last leg of the ISAF World Cup, held in Kieler Woche (Germany), where she won a silver medal. Weir is one of the front-runners to represent Australia at the 2012 Games, given her vast experience and her performances in her class.

2010 Uni Sailing Report

University sailing has never been stronger or more active, thanks largely to a group of Sydney based uni students who have created and promoted a range of events over the past 2 years. Continued growth looks certain, following 6 successful inter-university events over the past 18 months and renewed club enthusiasm at various universities. The 2010 events included a fleet regatta in Forster, NSW, a match racing regatta hosted by CYCA in Sydney, NSW and a representative team of students from UTS, USYD and UNSW who competed in Greece for the World University Match Racing Championships. The 2010 university sailing schedule concluded with the 2010 Australian University Games (AUG) at Perth in September 2010.

HSC Results out .... What Next?

With the release of HSC results, many of Australia’s best and brightest are now thinking what next? It is little known that the University of Sydney has scholarships available for the next generation of elite athletes and Olympians.

For over a century, sport has been a component of the student experience at the University of Sydney. The University boasts more than 300 Australian
Representatives, including 115 Olympians and more than 100 Wallabies. Since its inception in 1990, the Elite Athlete Program has become a leader in the provision of services to elite athletes.

This year, more than 260 students across 28 sports received financial sporting scholarships. A further 53 students were offered places in our Talented Athlete Program for emerging athletes.

In 2010, the development of a new national university sailing championship made significant strides. Sydney Uni students competed at the Australian University Fleet Racing Championship as well as the inaugural Match Racing and Teams Racing Championship events at the Australian University Games in Perth.

Scholarship holders at the front of the fleet in Sydney and Melbourne

The last week has been action packed for the universities sailors. Will Ryan took out the International 470 class competition, sailing with his sister against some of the worlds best. Krystal Weir formalized her comeback to the International Laser Radial Class, placing third. This week, USYD's best are down at Sail Melbourne which this year is the first event of the 2011 World Sailing Championships. The conditions have been good for our sailors who are again at the top of the fleet. Elizabeth Yin missed the first race on Monday but sailed well in the second and third race placing 10th and 11th respectively in the 40 boat Laser Radial fleet. Krystal is again the top Australian after a 3rd, 14th and 10th. Will Ryan is back sailing with his normal helm and is placed 4th Overall. We wish our sailors all the best for the rest of the week.
Check out the results at: http://www.yachting.org.au/site/yachting/event/32737/default.html

End of Semester Weekend Away - Hawks Nest

With many keen sailors ready for another trip, 23 of us, first timers, regulars and a couple of friends from UTS and UNSW, headed up north to hawks nest for three nights form the 19th – 22nd November! The rustic little holiday house across the road from the beach did not know what had hit it when it was packed with 23 sailors fighting it out for the very limited number of beds.

The forecast for the weekend did not looking so great, yet we were blessed with the weather with beautiful sunny days and balmy nights on the beach and consistent winds for great sailing on the windsurfers, lasers, a skiff, a B14 brought up by Daniel for everyone to have a go, and the kite boarding that accompanied the sailing was spectacular to watch and great for those who were granted lessons.

The days spent on the beach were an amazing start to the summer holidays; sailing, swimming and sun baking – what more could you ask for. The boats were launched from the beach making it easy to jump on and off, switching between the lasers, skiff and windsurfers at leisure.
